This study was funded by the Recovery Implementation Program for Endangered
Fish Species in the Upper Colorado River Basin. The Recovery Program is a joint effort
of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), U. S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR),
Western Area Power Administration, states of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, Upper
Basin water users, environmental organizations, and the Colorado River Energy
Distributors Association under Cooperative agreement 8-FC-40-06460 with the Larval
Fish Laboratory (LFL).
Project administration was facilitated by L. Crist, C. Karas, R. Muth, N.
Shropshire, and R. Williams. Colleague and friend Bob Williams was especially
instrumental in funding myself and the Larval Fish Laboratory more heavily in Recovery
Program research beginning in 1989, including that for my dissertation in 1991. He and
Larry Crist should be commended for their commitment to the long-term research needed
to identify and hopefully solve some of the problems that endangered fishes face in the
upper Colorado River Basin. Bob Muth removed administrative burden from me so that I
could concentrate on my work.
Laboratory and field assistance was provided by many individuals including N.
Bezzerides, G. Bestgen, J. Bundy, B. Compton, M. Farmer, B. Haines, S. Meismer, J.
Ruppert, T. Rolloff, G. Suszek, H. Tillquist, C. Wightman, M. Williams; I am sure there
are others that have escaped memory who also deserve thanks. Unpublished data was
provided by C. McAda and L. Lentsch.
Memorable times were provided by Don Proebstel, Steve Riley, Chas Gowan and
family, Peter Kiffney, Alan Frai~lclin, Tanya Shenlc, Gail Olsen, Frank Howe, Mariiet
Zablan, Jim Rice and family, LFL folks, and many participants in the Recovery Program.
ix
