abundance of the unique endemic ichthyofauna of the region <br />(Johnson and Rinne 1982). In 1974, following passage of the <br />Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973, Dexter National Fish <br />Hatchery (Dexter NFH, Dexter) began working with endangered <br />southwestern fishes to determine if they could be held and reared <br />in captivity. Since 1978, the Dexter facility has been totally <br />engaged in holding, culturing, and distributing many of the <br />imperiled fishes of the Southwest. Up to 20 species of imperiled <br />fishes have been held at one time and presently 14 species are <br />being h.ld at Dexter with three additional introductions planned <br />for 1986 (Table 1). <br />Table 1.
