In 1974, following passage of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973, Dexter National Fish Hatchery (Dexter NFH, Dexter) began working with endangered southwestern fishes to determine if they could be held and reared in captivity. Since 1978, the Dexter facility has been totally engaged in holding, culturing, and distributing many of the imperiled fishes of the Southwest. Up to 20 species of imperiled fishes have been held at one time and presently 14 species are being h.ld at Dexter with three additional introductions planned for 1986 (Table 1). Table 1.
