female bonytail were spawned over a four-week period utilizing CP <br />to induce egg ovulation; 11 were spawned in 1984. <br />Spawning and hatching techniques utilized were the same as those <br />reported for Colorado squawfish except that jars were not tested. <br />In 1983 female bonytail had a mean weight of 0.28 pounds. Number <br />of eggs taken per individual ranged from 1,015 to 10,384; mean egg <br />take was 4, 677. Average number of eggs per pound of body weight <br />varied from 5,075 to 29,930 with a mean of 17,280; egg viability <br />averaged 67.5%. Fry were distributed to the AGFD and the <br />California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG). In 1984, the <br />females averaged 0.72 pounds and produced 23,940 eggs per pound of <br />body weight. Total egg take was 181,108 and mean number of eggs <br />per female 16,464. Fry were shipped to CDFG. Although bonytail <br />were not spawned artificially in 1985, the fish spawned naturally <br />in holding ponds and when the broodfish were moved in early fall, <br />12,618 four-inch fingerlings were removed and later stocked in <br />Lake Mohave, AZ. We are maintaining 494 four-year-old brood and <br />1,424 excess fish that are scheduled for "experimental" stocking <br />in Arizona waters in 1986 or 1987. <br />Woundfin <br />Woundfin spawning was examined in 1984. Both natural and hormone <br />induced spawning were attempted; greatest success was achieved <br />through natural spawning on a prepared gravel bed (size range 1/4" <br />- 5"). Current was provided by flowing water through a plugged 2" <br />black plastic pipe with 1/8" holes drilled in it to pass water <br />somewhat uniformly over the gravel bed. Seventy adult woundfin <br />were placed in the spawning pond and 64 brought to the holding <br />house for spawning studies. Sexing woundfin was difficult and no <br />technique was fully reliable. Males averaged 4.97 grams and were <br />injected with CG to enhance milt production. Twenty females <br />(averaging 6.44 gms) were injected with CP to induce egg ovulation <br />and handstripped 24 hours later; twelve (60%) spawned <br />successfully. Total number of eggs produced was 2,067 and mean <br />number of eggs taken per female was 172. A total of 1.,163 swimup <br />fry were recovered and stocked along with fry produced by natural <br />reproduction in the ponds. A total of 3,500 woundfin ::ere <br />recovered in late summer. <br />Summary <br />Between 1981-1985, Dexter NFH personnel distributed 8,766,037 fry, <br />790,772 fingerling and 282 adult razorback sucker into historic <br />habitats in Arizona. During the same period 116,638 Colorado <br />squawfish fingerlings were stocked in the mainstream Colorado <br />River near Grand Junction, CO and 116,789 fingerlings and 301 <br />subadults (4 year olds) stocked into Arizona waters (Salt and <br />-40- <br /> <br />
