r
Fisheries
Fish sampling within this section vas done a=clnsivel~ with entanglement
netting. Most of this sampling occurred during tLe spring period when more
personnel were available to adequately sample the extensive area. Bases on
previous experience in the Colorado River arm of the reservoir, it vas antici-
pated rare or endangered fish, particularly Colorado aquawfish, would be
congregating in this a rea prior to moving up the San Juan River. Through
extensive netting of the area, ve were hoping to capture several of these rare
fish. Since our experience in netting squavfish under reservoir conditions
have shown a strong correlation between mesh size and the girth of the fish, a
variety of mesh sizes vas used. Trammel nets were aced along with gill wets
since, again based on previous experience, traamel nets have been far more
effective in capturing the relatively large-bodied razorback sucker. loth
floating and sinking type nets were used so that a wider range of existing hab-
itat could be sampled. Listed below are the fish species and numbers sampled
from this section during the spring period.
Summary of fish netted from San Juan Ari of Lake Powell
B?iI 1.0-(-2.0) from March 18, 1987
to April 12, 1987 in 5,616 net-boars.
Species Total Collected
Carp 1663
Striped Bass 477
Channel Catfish 195
Nalleye 46
Largemouth Bass 31
Razorback Sucker* 18
Black Bullhead 8
Flannelmouth Sucker 7
Northern Pike Z
Rainbow Trout 2
Colorado S uawfish 1
T ~L 2450
* total includes six recaptures
17
