r
Suspected humpback chubs in the Green River are not
concentrated in relatively short river reaches to the dc,gree thai
humpback chubs are in other Habitats; instead they are sparsely
distributed in a longer river reach that Lears little resemblance to
areas like Westwater and Black Rocks (M. Moretti, UDWR; pers.
comm.).
Movement and.Migration
Humpback chubs rarely leave restricted habitats in the Upper
Colorado River (Valdez and Nilson 1982, Archer et al. 1985).
Humpback chubs radiotagged in Black Rocks moved as far as i3.ti km
(8.1 mi) downstrea,u, and .«uc:i shorter distances upstream; but most
remained within Black Rocks of the area (Archer et al. 1985). Three
_ humpback chubs that were tagged in Westwater Canyon were recaptured
about 23.5 km (14 mi.) upstream in Black Rocks (Valdez and Clemmer
1982, Archer et al. 1985).
Movement patterns of humpback chubs in the Grand Canyon differ -
from those at Black Rocks. Adults use main channel habitats in the
Colorado River that are far away from presumed spawning habitats in
the Little Colorado River (Kaeding and Zimmerman 1983). Adults
moved as much as 17 km (10.2 mi), probably to access suitable
spawning sites .
8
