The humpback chub is l istod as endangered under <br />the U.S. Endangered Species Act anti Coiorariv iaw, a.~~ --- Yr ~------ <br />under Utah law (USFWS 1987). <br />METHODS <br />Literature .was reviewed to identify humpback chub <br />distribution, habitat use and limiting factors. Activity areas for <br />the species~in the Upper Basin* were defined and identified based on <br />information presented in UCRBCC (1984). This information was <br />summarized far each river in Colorado that may contain humpback <br />chubs. The draft report was reviewed by biologists familiar with- <br />the species. The final version reflects th~air comrr.ents, and was <br />approved by the CDOtd Northwest Regional Management Team. <br />RESULTS <br />Taxonomy <br />Colorado Basin Gila, including humpback, chub are <br />surrounded by taxonomic confusion. The humpback chub may be <br />sympatric with two other similar forms of Gila: roundtail chub <br />(C. robust.~r), and bonytail (G. e.leg~rns).. Most adult <br />Gila specimens are fererable to one of three distinct forms <br />(Valdez 1980).. <br />*As I~er the Colorado Compact of 1928, the Colorado Basin is divided <br />into Upper and Lower Basins at Lee Ferry, AL (C~trlsorr and Crrrtson <br />1J83). <br />2 <br />
