WRIS is a system for
organization and distribution of wildlife resource information.
WRIS provides a narrative literature review and computer-stored
geographic information system (GIS) data which: describe habitat use
by an animal species. The purpose of this paper is to present a
literature review of the humpback chub's life history, to identify
important habitat factors, and to recommend mapping criteria. This
is one in a series of four WRIS components for endangered fishes of
the Colorado River Basin.
WRIS is CDOW's response to two State laws that protect and
conserve wildlife. The Colorado Nongame-and Endangered Species Act
requires CDOW to protect endangered species, including the humpback
chub (Torres et a1. 1978). The Colorado Land Use Bill, HB 1041
of 1974, additionally requires CDOW to provide technical expertise
to county governments who wish to identify and manage growth-related
impacts upon wildlife (Schrupp 1983).
y
The humpback chub is a rare cyprinid fish that is endemic to
the Colorado River Basin (Behnke and Benson 1983). Adult specimens
have a prominent nuchal hump and large fins (Miller 1964). The
species tivas never common because .its presumed ttabit:tts, swift water
riverine areas, are rare (Behnke and Benson 1983). Nonetheless,
species abund~ince and distributivn have declined because of hubiiat
1
