HAPLOID - A cell or organism that has only one complete set of <br />chromosomes. <br />HETEROZYGOTE - Having- two- forms of a gene (allele) at a locus (Bb) . <br />HOMOZYGOTE - Having only one form of a gene (allele) at a locus <br />(BS) . <br />LOCIIS - The physical position occupied by a gene on a chromosome. <br />LOCI - Plural of locus. <br />NATIVE - A native species is one not introduced into an area by man <br />either by intention or by accident. <br />NIICLEIIB - The part of a cell which contains the genetic material. <br />PHENOTYPE - Observable and measurable characteristics of an <br />individual. It is produced by the combined effects of the <br />genotype and-the environment. <br />POPIILATION - "A population, in the genetic sense, is not just a <br />group of individuals, but a breeding group" (Falconer, 1981). <br />PROGENY - Offspring. <br />RANDOM - Arrive at by chance, without discrimination. <br />RECESSIVE - An allele whose phenotypic expression is masked by the <br />expression of a dominant allele. <br />SIBS - Progeny with parents in common, Half-sibs are progeny with <br />one parent in common (half brother/half sister). Full-sibs <br />are progeny with both parents in common (brother/sister). <br />SIB-MATING - A brother/sister mating. <br />STOCK - "A population of organisms, sharing a common environment <br />and participating in a common gene pool, that is sufficiently <br />discrete to be considered a self perpetuating, manageable <br />system" (Larkin, 1970). <br />STRAIN - " A fish population that exhibits reproducible <br />physiological, morphological, or cultural performance <br />characteristics that are significantly different from those of <br />other fish population of the same species, or a broodstock <br />derived from such a population and maintained thereafter as a <br />pure breeding population" (Kincaid, 1986). <br />TRIPLOID - An organism with 3 basic sets of chromosomes. <br />ZYGOTE - A fertilized egg. <br />1-12 <br />
