HAPLOID - A cell or organism that has only one complete set of
chromosomes.
HETEROZYGOTE - Having- two- forms of a gene (allele) at a locus (Bb) .
HOMOZYGOTE - Having only one form of a gene (allele) at a locus
(BS) .
LOCIIS - The physical position occupied by a gene on a chromosome.
LOCI - Plural of locus.
NATIVE - A native species is one not introduced into an area by man
either by intention or by accident.
NIICLEIIB - The part of a cell which contains the genetic material.
PHENOTYPE - Observable and measurable characteristics of an
individual. It is produced by the combined effects of the
genotype and-the environment.
POPIILATION - "A population, in the genetic sense, is not just a
group of individuals, but a breeding group" (Falconer, 1981).
PROGENY - Offspring.
RANDOM - Arrive at by chance, without discrimination.
RECESSIVE - An allele whose phenotypic expression is masked by the
expression of a dominant allele.
SIBS - Progeny with parents in common, Half-sibs are progeny with
one parent in common (half brother/half sister). Full-sibs
are progeny with both parents in common (brother/sister).
SIB-MATING - A brother/sister mating.
STOCK - "A population of organisms, sharing a common environment
and participating in a common gene pool, that is sufficiently
discrete to be considered a self perpetuating, manageable
system" (Larkin, 1970).
STRAIN - " A fish population that exhibits reproducible
physiological, morphological, or cultural performance
characteristics that are significantly different from those of
other fish population of the same species, or a broodstock
derived from such a population and maintained thereafter as a
pure breeding population" (Kincaid, 1986).
TRIPLOID - An organism with 3 basic sets of chromosomes.
ZYGOTE - A fertilized egg.
