1993 Kenney Res. Channel Catfish Study Report
Page 4
shoreline was sampled by electrofishing except for the inlet area.
Hoop nets were placed in areas with flowing water to spread scent
-from the bait. These areas were located in the inlet area of the
White River within the reservoir basin. Mackerel flavored cat
food, carp chunks, and raw shrimp were used as bait. Two hoop nets
of each size (for a total of four nets) were used .for sampling.
Trotlines were used briefly in an effort to add to the catch of
catfish. Two trotlines were placed on the bottom in various
locations around the reservoir, including the inlet area. Hooks
were baited with shrimp.
All channel catfish captured in the reservoir were weighed,
measured to total length (TL), recorded, marked, and returned to
the reservoir. The stocked catfish (those marked with an adipose
fin clip) were marked when recaptured with a pectoral spine clip if
shorter than 10 inches TL (254 mm). The other pectoral spine and
lastly the dorsal spine were to be removed upon successive
recaptures. Spinal clips will not adversely effect channel catfish
growth or survival (Holland 1987). Those fish longer than 10
inches TL received an individually numbered Floy tag. Catfish that
were not from the 3,000 fish plant; i.e., wild fish, were marked
with an individually numbered Fioy tag if longer than 10 inches TL.
Otherwise they received spine clips as described fob marked fish.
Data on all Floy tagged catfish are presented in Appendix B.
B. River sampling
The White River ~Tas divided into upper and lower reaches for
sampling. Each sampling reach was five miles long. The upper
reach began just below Taylor Draw Dam and continued downstream for
five miles (RM 104-99). The lower reach was selected as RM 79-74
because of the location of an access point at RM 75.6. However,
due to good navigability the actual length of river in the lower
reach electrofished was from RM 81-72.
-Two sampling methods were used on the river -- electrofishing and
baited hoop nets. Electrofishing was conducted using an 18 foot
jet powered, flat bottomed boat with a three person crew. The
electrofishing equipment consisted of a 5,000 watt portable
generator, a Coffelt WP 15 voltage pulsator, two spherical anodes,
and 50 feet (in eight and nine foot sections) of trailing steel
cable cathode. Hoop nets were two 2.5 feet diameter x 12 feet long
and two 3.5 feet diameter x 15 feet long nets with two throats
each.
The electrofishing procedure was to move slowly downstream along
one bank of the river in a sampling reach. When one side of the
river was completed, the other bank was sampled starting again from
