However, develop- <br />ment of alternative beneficial uses of <br />sa.line water and innovative <br />measures to produce multipurpose <br />benefits such as fresh water, power, <br />and chemicals may help reduce the <br />costs of single-purpose control <br />measures. <br />Congressional authority for joint <br />feasibility studies with industrial <br />water users allows efforts to <br />continue in the area of beneficial <br />water use. <br />Some of the current structural <br />methods of salinity control, such as <br />desalting and lined evaporation <br />ponds for point and diffuse salt <br />sources, are proving expensive <br />when compared to irrigation <br /> <br />t <br />Continue Program <br />Implementation <br />Interior and USDA agencies' <br />investigations to refine plans will <br />continue, as funding permits, on <br />irrigation salt source control units as <br />well as other units to define the <br />most cost-effective measures. Con- <br />struction on Grand Valley Stage <br />Two is continuing, deep-well- <br />injection testing will start in late <br />1989 on Paradox Valley, and plans <br />will continue on other Reclamation <br />units. USDA onfarm implementa- <br />tion in Grand Valley, Uinta Basin, <br />Big Sandy River, Lower Gunnison, <br />and other units will proceed as <br />program funding permits. <br />The Forum, representing the <br />Basin States, has indicated it will <br />continue to work with Interior and <br />Agriculture on program implemen- <br />tation to be certain the quality of <br />Colorado River water is maintained <br />at the 1972 historical levels as the <br />Basin States continue to develop <br />their compact-apportioned waters. <br />For questions concerning the <br />Federal program or specific projects, <br />contact the: <br />The enjoyment of good quality water.
