Market
Meeker, CO 81641
Contact: Bill Hahnenberg, District Ranger,
White River National Forest,
or Natasha Goedert, Wildlife Biologist, at (970) 878-4039.

Restoration
Objectives:

Restore riparian and aquatic habitat through Coordinated
Resource Management.

Description: Legal: T2N, R90W, Sections 26, 27, 34, and 35. Heavy use of
Lost Park by livestock and big game in the past caused degradation to the chan-
nel and riparian areas, and adversely affected fish habitat. A Coordinated
Resource Management Plan was developed between the U.S. Forest Service, the
Division of Wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management, Wakara Ranch and the
Mountain Elk Foundation to alleviate impacts to the Lost Creek drainage.

Directions: From Meeker, Colorado drive north on Hwy. 13 for 2 miles to
the intersection of Rio Blanco County Road 8. Travel approximately 28 miles on
RBC-8 to the Fawn Creek Road (FDR 280). Continue for another 2.5 miles on
FDR 280 to the intersection of FDR 290 (Moeller Creek). From this point only
4-wheel drive vehicles should drive the road. Continue on FDR 290 for approxi-
mately 5 miles to intersection of FDR 293. Take FDR 293 to the road closure
sign on the west side of Lost Park. Park and walk one mile into the site.
NOTE- Inclement weather can adversely alter road conditions rapidly.

Goals: The improvement of riparian areas along Lost Creek and Hahn
Creek (which is a tributary to Lost Creek) to improve fish habitat. These water-
ways contain Colorado River cutthroat trout.

Methods: Log structures were placed in the Lost Creek channel to aid in
improvement to fish habitat. A fence exclosure was built to control livestock and
wildlife access to the creek and protect the riparian areas from overuse.
Alternative Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) lands are used early in the
grazing season prior to livestock entering the Lost Park Cattle Allotment. This
grazing management practice achieves vegetation management goals on DOW
lands while reducing the amount of grazing time on the Lost Park Allotment

46 Driving Guide .
