4. Williams Fork of the Yampa River
This drainage is located south of Craig and Hayden and
includes 33 lakes (309 ac) and 68 streams (387 mi). The
confluence of the Williams Fork with the Yampa River is
located southwest of Craig near to where Highway 13 first
comes into close proximity to the Williams Fork from a
southerly direction. Two stream reaches (42 mi), one on
USFS land on the East Fork of the Williams Fork and the
other on private land on the mainstem river, and two private
lakes are currently managed as put-and-take and put-and-grow
trout fisheries in Intensive Management categories 100 and
130. Seventeen (17) high lakes and reservoirs (195 ac) are
managed using stocked trout in put-and-grow/natural
recruitment fisheries. Ten stream reaches (71 mi) and one lake
(36 ac) currently support pure populations of Colorado River
cutthroat trout or are being considered for restoration for this
purpose. These include Beaver Creek (WC #19150), Indian
Run (WC #20759), Pagoda Creek (WC #27739), Slide Creek
(WC #22062)-all tributaries to the South Fork of the Williams
Fork River; the two headwater reaches of the South Fork of
the Williams Fork River (WC #22829 and #23482) that occur
on USFS land; and Rough Creek (WC #23301), the upper
reach of Poose Creek (WC #23418) above Vaughn Lake,
Bunker Creek (WC #19364) and Vaughn Lake (#70689)-all
located on the East Fork of the Williams Fork River. Wild
trout fisheries are managed for in 13 stream reaches covering
57 mi. Forty-three (43) stream reaches (217 mi) and eight
lakes (37 ac) are managed for conservation of other native
aquatic wildlife. All waters within this drainage have been
classified as protected habitat with respect to whirling disease
(WD) and can be stocked if necessary with WD negative fish
only.
