A draft document for solutions
will be written by the partnership by August. Mr. Janish
reviewed the problems identified as a result of the findings
meetings, and then discussed the suggested solution methods
which have been identified. The solutions revolve around
marketing fishing to the actual demographics in the country,
and reinforcing the types of choices which people now make
in their lives. The process being followed by the
Partnership Council should be sufficiently complete, that in
January 1999 Janish should have a completed product and can
report its content and discuss with the Council.
Following considerable discussion of the problems and
what is ahead for the fishing industry and sporting
population, the Council agreed that Mr. Janish should report
at the Council meeting next January and also bring from the
staff a recommendation of whether, and to what extent, the
CRFWC should become involved.
The report was presented by Mr. Jon Sjoberg who
provided the group with a draft summary assessment of status
and conservation needs for amphibian species in the Colorado
River Basin(see Appendix H). This is an extension of the
effort started in 1995 to do an assessment of non-listed
fish species and other species where there might be the
opportunity, given ranges of the animals in one or more
states, to make multiple-state agreements through the CRFWC
for conservation and thereby reduce the potential for
listing for those species.
In the process of gathering data, additional species
were identified. All Council states have replied except
California, which is still involved in preparing
information, and some information from the other states, for
species not on the original request. After this data is
received, the states will review to make sure the
compilation is accurate, and the report will be presented to
14

1
1

1

1

t
