1
for search of other sources for such information. That is
now proceeding and it will be approximately one year before
the work is completed. Following this the staff should be
in a position to evaluate the needs of the three species
preparatory to starting writing a plan. None of the species
has yet been elevated to a candidate for potential T&E
listing nor has the FWS or states received any requests to
investigate for listing. However, the Flannelmouth Sucker
will be included by the Lower Basin in the Multi-species
Conservation Plan as a priority target species for
catagorization to be included in the plan.
Mr. Kochman provided the information in place of Tom
Nesler. Throughout the past year working groups from the
three states coordinating the planning for this fish have
been meeting with the federal agencies also responsible for
aspects of this fish's conservation; the USFWS, USBLM, and
the US Forest Service. They have developed some
arrangements whereby the coordination and approvals
necessary to the overall implementation of the conservation
plan can occur, see Appendix G. The effort now includes
eighteen separate sub-populations and the working group is
attempting to deal with the importance of separate
populations. The group will meet again on May 5th to try to
develop some consensus on these subjects with the objective
of starting a draft conservation plan. At the Council's
January 1999 meeting the group anticipates having a draft
plan combining the states and the responsible federal
agencies for the Council's review.
Mr John Hamill, Denver Regional Office FWS, provided
the Council with the most recent information available to
the FWS. There are now two cutthroat trout listed as
Threatened or Endangered in the Colorado River system, the
Greenback and the Lahontan Cutthroat. Several other
petitions have been received by the FWS to list cutthroat
elsewhere, but not yet in the Colorado River Basin. The
Organization For Biodiversity has notified FWS that they can
expect, as early as next week, a petition to list the
Colorado River Cutthroat. It appears their objective is to
increase the issue of T&E status of cutthroats throughout
the West.
12

1

1

11
