The Colorado River Wildlife Council
In 1956 an interstate committee was formed to coordinate the protection and management
of the fish and wildlife resources of the Colorado River. This committee was formalized on
March 31, 1964, as the Colorado River Wildlife Council.
The Council consists of representatives of fish and game departments and wildlife
agencies of the seven states located on the Colorado River drainage - Arizona, California,
Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
Participating but nonvoting members of the Council may include representatives from the
following federal agencies: the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife
Service, Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, Coast Guard, Army Corps of
Engineers and such other agencies as may be determined by the Council. The purposes and
goals of the Council are:
(a) To foster, encourage, and promote the sound management and use of all fish and
wildlife resources in the Colorado River drainage.
(b) To study proposed or current Federal projects affecting the Colorado River drainage
and to provide assistance or advice to any agency if and when the Council deems it
necessary for the beneficial management of the fish and wildlife resources.
(c) To advise on the planning and coordination of any interstate or intrastate activity
affecting the fish and wildlife resources of the Colorado River drainage.
(d) To suggest, consider, and encourage coordination of laws and regulations deemed
necessary for the protection, welfare, and proper use of the fish and wildlife resources in the
Colorado River drainage and to recommend such laws and regulations for adoption by the
appropriate authorities.
2
