Nevada - The Department of Fish and Game has some money available for nongame
species, with priority given to birds and mammals, especially raptors and
predatory mammals. The Department, which has statutory authority for
protection for all species, employs two nongame biologists.
New Mexico - The Department of Game and Fish has money and authority for management
of endangered, protected and nongame species. An Endangered Species
Program was established in 1974 with four biologists. The Department's
authority includes responsibility for all vertebrates, crustaceans and
mollusks.
Utah - The Division of Wildlife Resources has money and authority for management of en-
dangered, protected and nongame species, including reptiles and amphib-
ians. Three nongame biologists are now employed with emphasis on
nonaquatic species.
Wyoming - The Game and Fish Department has an unofficial list of rare and endangered
species and also publishes a pamphlet describing these species. All
Department management units have the responsibility for management of
nongame and threatened species.
Notations
1 For taxonomical continuity, the American Fisheries Society Special Publication No. 6,
1970, "A List of Common and Scientific Names of Fishes", is strictly followed.
2 Utah State University completed a study, 1973, "Distribution, Abundance and Life
History of the Fishes of the Upper Colorado River Basin."
3 Population dispersion, community structure, and phenological relationships between
fish and their environment in the Virgin River system of Utah, Arizona, and Nevada are
being studied by the University of Nevada under contract with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, Salt Lake City.
4 The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Salt Lake City, initiated and is supporting a long-
term turbidity, temperature, and sediment monitoring program on the Yampa River near
Maybell and at Echo Park on the Green River.
14
