Two biologists are assigned to
nongame species, with the emphasis on federally recognized endangered
or threatened species. The Department has published a list of "Threatened
Wildlife of Arizona."
California - The Department of Fish and Game has authority to protect, and manage rare,
endangered and threatened species, and it has a cooperative agreement
with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to work with endangered species on
the federal list. The Department has three full-time wildlife biologists and
two full-time fishery biologists assigned to rare and endangered and
and nongame species.
Colorado - The Division of Wildlife has statutory authority to protect and manage all wildlife
including state and federally listed threatened and endangered species as
well as species classified as nongame. The Colorado Nongame Staff
consists of one supervisor, one secretary and five biologists involved in
research and management of aquatics, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphib-
ians and raptors. Primary emphasis is directed at recovery of state and
federally listed threatened and endangered species by captive breeding,
translocation or reintroduction. Federal grant-in-aid funds, through the
Endangered Species Act of 1973, are being used in recovery programs. On
June 3, 1977, the Governor signed into law a bill which provides for a
check-off box on state income tax forms and allows the taxpayers to
donate, 1, 5 or 10 dollars of their refund to the nongame program budget.
13
