STATUS OF DRUGS AND CHEMICALS USED FOR DISEASE
CONTROL IN FISH CULTURE - 1987

DOUGLAS L. MITCHUM

WYOMING GAME AND FISH DEPARTMENT
GAME AND FISH LABORATORY
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING
P.O. BOX 3312
LARAMIE, WYOMING 82071

ABSTRACT

Therapeutants, anesthetics and disinfectants currently registered
or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and/or U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in disease control in
food fish culture are presented. Problems involving some historically
important agents not registered or approved, efforts to register others
and the need for new disease control products are also discussed.

INTRODUCTION

A few months ago, for a meeting of hatchery superintendents, I was requested
to give a report on the use of drugs and chemicals for fish disease control. In
preparing for the task, I found that most of us in fisheries work are aware that
only "registered" or "approved" compounds are to be used for disease control and
other purposes. I also noted that there was much confus i on among us regard i ng
which compounds were "legal" for use, and how they were to be used, etc. Some
agents, used extensively in the past, were never registered or are no longer
1 ega 1 or approved. Much uncertainty and rumor exi st as to why th is is the
situation. Adding to the confusion, new compounds have recently been approved,
and research is in the progress to obtain a registered status on certain other
compounds.

..

Thi s presentation is intended to provi de some hi stori ca 1 background and
clarify the present registration status of fishery drugs and chemicals. Remarks
are generally limited to those agents used for disease control in fish culture.

The existinq federal requlatorv situation

The U.S. Congress passed laws which empowered the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) with control of the use of pesticides and the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) with control of the use of drugs. The formation of policy,
rules and guidelines to carry out these laws was also given to these respective

17
