This device consisted of a combination
AC. DC, Homel1te generator with an output of 230 volts and 6.3 amperes.
The generator was connected to one positive and two negative electrodes
by 200 feet of cord. Alternating current was found more eftective in

stunning fish than direct c:urrent, probably beoause ot the turbulent

r,
(
!

i
~l

water in the areas sampled.

During late spring and early S\.UlIfl1Or, when water volUlll8 and
turbidities were very bigh, throw-lines were the only etrective devioes
found tor collecting fish of larger than fingerling size. Cotton oords
were cut to a length varying trom 10 to 25 feet and served as the main

lines. From these, l2-inch drop lines with hooks were tied at 5-foot

intervals. A weight was attached to one end, and the other was anohored

near the shoreline. Throw-lines oontained from two to five hooks

baited with whole kernel corn or beef liver. They were usually ohecked
at about 7 am, 12 noon, and 6 pm. This Ill8thod of collection was found
seleotive tor larger fish; usually carp Cym-inu6 carpio Linnaeus,
ohannel oatfish Ictalurus punotatus Raf'inesque, and bonytail ohubs
g!l!, robusta Baird and Girard.

Four types of seines were used during field operations.
Two-man minnow seines \oTero successful in capturing small fish in side
channels and shallow water areas. These seines were 3 feet in depth,

trom 15 to 20 feet in length, and had a t-inch mesh. A small one-man
push seine was made by rolling the netting around a bra1l until the
two brails were about three feet apart. This method proved effeotive
tor capturing Ddnnows and other small fish in small side channels

during tho summar investigations. Tied bag seines and tied straight
