~

GRANGE:
GRANGECOM:

GTREND:
GTRENDCOM:

GPROTEOS:
GPROTCOM:

GTHREAT:
GTHREATCOM:

GFRAGIL:
GFRAGILCOM:

GOTHCONSID:

B
Creeks tributary to the McCloud River, including
Sheepheaven, Tate, Edson, and Moosehead creeks, and the
McCloud River above Middle Falls. Introduced and established
in Swamp Creek and Trout Creek (transplants originated from
Sheepheaven Creek) (Moyle et al. 1989).

A
USFS has fenced much of the Sheepheaven Creek habitat.

A
Poor watershed management related to logging, grazing, and
road construction (which cause erosion and siltation) ,
combined with hydroelectric interests (dam has been proposed
for the McCloud River) and several years of drought, could
threaten populations that presently exist in high quality,
spring-fed waters. Spring-fed streams are vulnerable to
alteration caused by the effects of private wells and
contamination on groundwater. Hybridization with hatchery
rainbow trout is an additional potential threat. Probably
can withstand limited catch-and-release fishing.

C

Rank and Reasons:
GRANK: GST2 GREVDATE: 92-11-24
GREASONS: Major habitats are impacted by drought. Watershed around
habitat is private land, subject to erosion due to logging,
grazing. Dam has been proposed for McCloud River. Small
range. Poorly known life history.

Needs:
GRSRCHNEED: Investigate all phases of life history. Periodically
determine through electrophoresis whether hybridization
between redband and rainbow trout is occurring. Evaluate the
effects of fishing regulations and hatchery stocking
procedures on redband trout and habitat.

GINVENNEED: Census populations.

GPROTNEED: Acquire Sheepheaven Creek land. Acquire as much land as
possible along the upper river above Middle Falls (area has
recreational as well as conservation value). Give EOs in
Shasta-Trinity National Forest special protection. Encourage
designation of the McCloud River as a wild and/or scenic
river: Stop the planting of hatchery fishes in redband trout
range.

GSTEWNEED:

References:
SOURCECODE: CITATION:
