STAT:
Electrophoretic analyses by Berg (1987) suggest that the
three known lineages of redband trout (inland, Goose Lake,
and McCloud) were derived independently from a coastal
rainbow trout-like common ancestor; each of these lineages
now is genetically distinct and probably warrant recognition
as a subspecies of rainbow trout. The McCloud River
population has maintained its genetic integrity despite the
stocking of hatchery rainbow trout in the river (stocked '
trout apparently do not survive to reproduce) (Moyle et al.
1989). Behnke (1992) provisionally included native O. MYKISS
in the McCloud and Pit river drainages in subspecies STONEI.
He noted that the redband trout native to Sheepheaven Creek
is sufficiently differentiated to justify recognition a a
new subspecies.

OLD.TAXCOM:

GEXEMPSITE: SHEEPHEAVEN CREEK, CALIFORNIA
HABITAT:

PERMANENCE: Permanent.

Rankinq Factors:
GESTEOS: A
GESTEOSCOM:

G~mm: B
G~mmCOM:
