I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

67

final step, all data were pooled and the discriminant function checked again. The

discriminant function was also analyzed for its ability to drop variables without loss of

resolution, or whether all variables must remain in the model for it to be applicable.

Suitability of the classification scheme was further compared for large and small larvae.

The length-weight relationship for Ad libitum treatment larvae from all three

experiments was pooled and used to calculate a relative condition index for larval

razorback suckers in length ranges used for this experiment. Using length-weight data

from pooled Ad libitum treatment larvae as a basis, a relative condition index (LaCren

1951) for razorback larvae, applicable within the size range of larvae studied under

laboratory conditions, was developed:

(Relative Condition) Kn = WI Ws where Ws = aLb,

where W is individual dry weight, L is its length and a and b are constants described from

the length-weight relation. Ws is the length-specific standard weight for a larva. Larvae

having a condition similar to the mean laboratory larvae will have a relative condition

factor (Kn) of one.

Condition factors were used alone and in concert with percentage body fat to

confirm the ability to classify individual larvae into feeding groups. Reclassification

success was analyzed in the same manner as length-weight data. The ability to

discriminate was compared to discriminant functions using raw length-weight data to

determine the best means for classifying unknowns.
