METHODS

The study had two major parts; a literature review to define the
current level of knowledge relative to the study area, and a field
sampling program to determine species presence, abundance, and im-
portance in the study area.
The literature review accumulated all pertinent data on the
aquatic biology of the Green River in or near the study area. Few
aquatic biology surveys have been completed in the area, so the scope
of the review was broadened. Data pertinent to the Green River from
Split Mountain Gorge to Sand Wash was utilized. This includes a
section of river about 32 km above and 96.5 km below the field
study area.
The field study included samples of fish, benthic macroinverte-
brates, periphyton, plankton, and macrophytes within the study area.
Samples ....'ere taken monthly from April through September, 1979. In-
vertebrate, plankton, and periphyton samples were taken at an upper
station (above Halker Hollow), middle station (between t'lalker Hollow
and Baser Wash), and lower station (below Baser Wash) (Figure 1).
Fishes were sampled throughout the study area with a boat-mounted
DC electrofishing unit and seines (9.1 m x 1.8 m x .6 cm and 4.6 m x
1.2 m x .3 em). The entire study section was floated each month
and sampling was conducted by habitat type so habitat preferences could
be determined. Electrofishing runs were timed, and the area of seine
hauls recorded so catch/unit effort could be determined. All fish
