.

.

.

RESULTS

I

The results will be divided into two sections; a biological section will
present the data obtained from radio-tracking the fish, and a technical section
will present data obtained during the tests of telemetry equipment.

.

BIOLOGY CAL .
Four radio tagged fish were released in a backwater near Ouray on May 14,
1978. All four were still in that backwater the next morning. The following
day, May 16, only one fish (40.652) remained in the backwater. Fish 40.612 was
located 3-1/2 miles downstream from the point of release (Figure 1). The other
two fish were never relocated. Fish 40.670 was released near Jensen on May 15
and located 38 miles downstream 16 days later (June 1) (Figure 1). The fish re-
mained in this area at least until June 4. He was located 21 miles below that
site, in Pariette Draw, on June 12. He remained in the backwater created by the
flooded wash until June 21, when he was apparently chased out by our attempts to
capture him. He was located in a small backwater 2 days later, 6 miles below
Pariette Draw. Seven days later (June 30), he was located another 3 miles down-
stream, again in a small, slow side channel. This was the last time 40.670 was
located. Fish 40.670 nIDved over 78 miles downstream between the time of release
(May 15) and the time of last location (June 30).
Of the two fish that were located after movement from the release site,
40.612 was found in a run, 6 to 8 feet deep with a moderate current; fish 40.670
was located 4 times, always in backwaters or areas of very slow current.
16

.

.

.

.

.

.
