This large backwater,
designated Big Island, was located at RMI 333.2. These two backwaters,
as well as the main river at RMI 332.2, were sampled throughout the
study.

At Jensen, the designated reference backwater did persist throughout
the study period and was sampled every trip. This Jensen reference
backwater was located at RMI 300.26 and was designated BA-300.26.
A short distance upstream from the reference backwater was a shallow,
broad backwater which later in the season at low river flows became
intermittently isolated from the main river flows for short periods
of time and was referred to as the "small" backwater (BA-300.27).
The main river was sampled at RMI 300.26. Downstream at about
RMI 298.6, about 200 m upstream from the confluence with Squaw Creek,
another backwater was sampled and, for convenience, named Squaw Creek
or BA-298.6. These four sites were sampled at Jensen.

At Ouray the designated reference backwater also dried up as river-
flows decreased, but another smaller backwater formed at that site.
We designated this backwater at RMI 251.0 as the "near-reference" or
BA-251.0. The near-reference backwater persisted throughout the sampling
season. The main river was also sampled at RMI 251.0. Downstream
at RMI 250.8 was a broader, shallower backwater we designated
Moult Bend backwater (BA-250.8). Further downstream, at RMI 249.7,
about 200 m upstream from the confluence with Old Charley Wash, was
another backwater selected for sampling.
