It prefers shoal areas <br />where aquatic vegetation is moderate 10 dense. It attains a maximum <br />length of 10 to 12 inches, growing to a length of 3 inches in its sec- <br />ond year of life under average condilions. Spawning occurs over a <br />long period, lasting well into July. The e~gs are adhesive and are <br />scattered over beds of rooted aquatic plants. The food of the Golden <br />Shiner is primarily animal plankton, although plant plankton, other <br />algae, both terrestrial and aquatic Dects, and other small aquatic <br />animals make up their diet. <br />The Western Golden Shiner is DOt overly abundant in Colorado <br />waters. It is a good bait minnow. Itrontributes to the diet of game <br />fish in the waters it inhabits.
