Summary of the Changes in the List of Fishes
and Their Distribution

As a result of the recent survey of the fishes of Wyoming, some species have
been added to the state list, others have been deleted, and some important changes
in distribution have been noted.

Species Added to the State List:

Dorosoma cepedianum, gizzard shad
Oncorhynchus kisutch, coho salmon
Salvelinus malma, Dolly Varden
Phoxinus neogaeus, finescale dace
Gila elegans. bony tail
Chasmistes lioms, June sucker
Esox lucius, northern pike
Poecilia reticulata, guppy
Pomoxis annularis, white crappie
Etheostoma nigmm, Johnny darter

.
E
i
j
;~
,

.
If
~;

Species Deleted from the State List:

Salmo salar, the Atlantic salmon. Simon (1951) listed this species on the basis
of early introductions to Wyoming. It no longer occurs within the state.

Pantosteus jordani, Jordan's sucker, listed by Simon (1951) has been relegated
to the synonymy of Catostomus platyrhynchus (see p. 112).

Cottus semiscaber, the Rocky Mountain Bullhead, was treated as a full species
by Simon (1951), in this edition, this form is treated as a form of Cottus
bairdi, possibly a subspecies (see p. 150).

a

Species Erroneously Listed from the Literature for Wyoming:

Hybopsis storeriana. the silver chub. Although Wyoming has been included in
the range of this species (Forbes and Richardson 1920, p. 102; and Blair, et aI,
1957, p. III and 1968. p. 69), it has never been collected in the state.

Dionda nubila, the ozark minnow. Eddy (1957, p, 102) records the range of
this minnow as Wyoming to Illinois. According to Cross (1967 p. 143-144),
this species probably ranges north only to southeastern Kansas in the western
part of its range.

Species Retained on the State List, but probably now Extinct in Wyoming:
Ptychocheilus lucius, Colorado squaw fish
Notropis blennius, river shiner
ChiIsmistes lioms, June sucker
Xyrauchen texanus. humpback sucker
Gila elegans, bony tail

Changes in Distribution of Certain Species:
Major changes in the distribution of the fishes of Wyoming in recent years
seem to have resulted from two causes: (I) a general deterioration of stream
habitats resulting from multiple water uses, and (2) indiscriminate transplanting of
bait fishes from one drainage to another.

152

..;':!i4:jJf""'~'~!I';1

The
follows:
apparentl
The caus,
a variety
conditio (
including
the coml
drainage.
and the
permancl
primarily
the NOr!
mostly 1
increasc(
decrease
conceiva
the Norl
Missouri
the Norl
and a c(
are into'
species I
and CfC(
extincti'

Expans

T\
toleranl
abovc,
toleran
abumb
spread
is proh
and val
by pCI
plains
establi~
species
Buttes
its pre!

1
suckcl
on th
establl
and II
natiVe
establ
result'
