Living suckers of this genus include the cui-ui lakesucker Chasmistes cujltS,
from Pyramid Lake, Nevada, the Klamath sucker, Chasmistes brevirostris from
Klamath Lake, Oregon, the June sucker, Chasmistes liorus, from Utah Lake, Utah,
and an unnamed species from Oregon. Dr. Hubbs identified the specimen from the
Snake River as Chasmistes liarus, but Dr. R. R. Miller believes that it may be a
distinct species (personal communication).
The known species of Chasmistes inhabit lakes. The peculiar mouth is
apparently secondarily modified from the typical sucker mouth for feeding upon
plankton.
The specimen collected by Dr. Murie is presumed to have come from Jackson
Lake. Whether this rare and unusual fish may still live in that lake remains to be
determined.
All of the suckers of the genus Chasmistes are believed to be in danger of
extinction, partly as a result of the warming trend since the last glacial period, and
the disappearance of pluvial lakes from the Western United States, partly as a result
of man's activities. The species from Utah Lake may now be extinct, and the
Jackson Lake form may, in fact have preceded its near relatives in becoming
extinct.
This large, bizarre sucker is native to the Colorado River Basin. In Wyoming it
occurred in the Green River below Green River city before the construction of
Flaming Gorge Reservoir. It was probably eliminated by chemical treatment of the
Green River in 1962, but with the construction of the reservoir its specialized
habitat, the torrential canyon river, was eliminated. As in the case of the Colorado
squawfish, there is probably no longer a suitable habitat for this species in
Wyoming.
