.......

~~t.i'..........",~~'f."~~~..~~~rt,~_-~Ci-:;?_'~'?i;'.'.....->""'""':\."i=""N<~'~,""_J"'~-'c

Depth of Capture.' All fish were taken in shallow water, usu.ally 2 feet
or less. Some were taken in the Yaq>a River in a gill net where the water
was from 3 to 4 feet. deep. Gill nets were unsuccessful in taking fish in
the Yampa in water over 4 feet deep.

Method of Capture. Fish were taken by the use of gill nets, thro,,-
lines and seines. The gill nets were t'W'O inch and 3/4 inch mesh, and only
the 3/4 ins:h mesh net took fish. Seining was by the two-man method. in the
Yampa with a 2O-foot seine and by the one-man push-se1re method in the Green.
Throwlines were used in both rivers, but were more effective in the Green
River.

Invertebrate Collection. Numerous mayfly larvae were found under stones
in the Green River. I also found one Hemipteran, some beetle larvae, and
some insects that swam on top of the water much like a water strider. Several
dragonf17 larvae were also found.

General. Only two adult bonytail chubs were taken at Echo Park, one
on a line; the other in a gill net. I did observe dead bonytaUs lying on
the bank.. however . (Probably caught by fishermen.) Seining produced quite
a few young bonytails in the Yampa. There seemed to be many more young fish
in the shallow necks and cut -arts where there was no current than in the
main channel of the Ya.nu?a itselt. One carp about 3 inches long vas seined
in a cut-oft pool which had a detinite hump on its bac.k. The Green River
Spring dace was taken by seinina more otten than any other fish in the Green
River. They seemed to be rather scarce in the Yamps. River. One gravid
female carp and one gravid female catfish were taken in the Green River.
Attempts to take plankton were for the most part unsuccessful. Fish were
preserved in lO~ formalin and invertebrates in alcohol.

Gates of Lodore

September 3, 1962

I observed several carp feeding on debriS which was floatins down the
river. The river was a little less turbid than it was at my last observation
in July.

September 5 I 1962
I observed many carp feeding on the debris which was floating dovn the
river. I managed to spear one of them. Took length, weight and scale
sample. The fish was a female. Length.. 19.7 inchesj weight, 11455.6 sma.

September 6 I 1962
Throwlines set the night before prOduced no fish. The lines were se't
in the same places that I had takenbonytail chubs during high water earlier
in the summer.

September 7, 1962

Spent the night at Brown's Park. Four potassium permanganate dispensers
were placed on the swinging bridge. one was used only for a short t1me
because it was throwing permanganate on the bank.

=25=
