4

Prairie Naturalist 26(1 ): March 1994

net (32 fish/l00 net-nights), but in 1992 the CPUE with round nets (59 fish/l 00 net-
nights) was higher than the CPUE with D nets (40 fish/l 00 net-nights; P = 0.0006).
Thirteen fish species were captured (Table 1). In both 1991 and 1992, we
captured 12 species with D nets and nine species with round nets. Brown trout and
quilIback were captured exclusively in D nets. However, sampling effort with D
nets was twice that of round nets. Species composition differed between catches of
the D and round nets in both 1991 (P <0.00(1) and 1992 (P <0.00(1), and between
1991 and 1992 for D nets (P <0.0001) and for round nets (P <0.00(1).
Common carp, northern redhorse, white sucker, longnose sucker, channel
catfish, and small mouth bass composed 92 % of the catch in 1991 and 97% in 1992.
Among these six species, the CPUE of white suckers (1992) and smallmouth bass
(1991 and 1992) was significantly greater with round nets (fable 2).
Several differences in CPUE by type of net between 1991 and 1992 were
observed (Table 2). In 1992, CPUE with the D nets was significantly higher for
white suckers and longnose suckers, but lower for common carp. Similarly, CPUE
with round nets was significantly higher for white suckers and longnose suckers in
1992.
The CPUE varied among the eight sampling sites (Fig. 2). In 1991, CPUE
with D nets differed significantly for white suckers, channel catfish, and small-
mouth bass, and with round nets for common carp, white suckers, and smallmouth
bass. In 1992, significant differences among sampling sites were observed with D
nets for northern redhorse, white suckers, and longnose suckers, and with round nets
for white suckers and smallmouth bass. Similarities iii CPUE among the sampling
sites with the two types of nets were not evident for most of the species, but some
commonalities were seen. Longnose suckers were absent or CPUE was very low at

Table 1. Fishes captured with 0 and round hoop nets in the Laramie River
during 1991 and 1992.
