Accordingly, we oppose the
proposal to stock largemouth bass and black crappie in
McPhee.

Largemouth bass are repeat offenders when it
comes to predation on Colorado River. endangered fish.
Langhorst (1989), Hendrickson and Brooks (1987), and
Osmundson (1987) all report l~rgemouth bass predation
on both razorback sucker and Colorado squawfish. In
fact, Osmundson (1987) reported that largemouth bass
actually prefer young Colorado squawfish to other
species, including red shiner and fathead minnow, when
given a choice of prey. Osmundson (1989) also noted
black crappie predation on young Colorado squawfish in
floodplain grow-out. ponds along the.CQlorado River.

The Division's stocking proposal for McPhee
contends that largemouth bass and black crappie
escapement from NcPhee is unlikely. But the Division
cannot ensure that this is the case; it is the Bureau
of Reclamation, not the Division,:which operates the

tJ.do.

_.~..

@ Primed on 100"/" recycled unbleached paper.

a member of Earth Share",
