Our comments primarily refer to situations that are not
wholly in compliance with the Interim Procedur~s..tor stockina of
Nonnative Fish in the UODQr Colorado Rivor BLlsin.

The maj or depelrture from the referenced procedures pe.rtains to
stocking of channel catfish below tho 100 year flood plain and
other ~piny rayed fishes below the 40 year flood plain or into
waters diGcharging directly into tribut~rles to the Colorado River
system. WA concur ~hat impacts of stookin~ channel catfish in the
circumstances descrlbe~ will likely be in~ignificant givQn tho fact
that there is ~ substantial resident population in the habitats
occupied by th~ endangered Colorado River fiahes. There may be
programs in the future where ettorts are made to reduce channGl
catfish populations and their release in the vicinity of those
activities should be curtailed if there is any likelihood that such
stockings would conflict with those efforts.

All of the other sp@cies proposod for ctooking helve been stocked
enumerable times and have had ample opportunity to colonize the
main stem Coloreldo River system had habitat conditions been
favorable. How~ver, there may be ciroumGtances where research or
recove1.-Y activiti.es coula be adversely affect.l?d by a sPQciflc
stocking activity, therefore, all stocking of t:x,otic species should
be continuallY revi AWp.n t.o assurQ that they are not in conflict
with activities in the vIcinity. In the situations wh~re there is
an opportunity for direot escapement into the Culorado River
~ystem, every ettort should bp. made to scraGn those outlet
facilities.: At McPhee it ~uuld seem that the control mea!';ures
offered as~a solution to correoting any emigration proble~s uould
very e~sily be implemented without waiting for a problem to arise.
If any of these reservoirs are extensively drawn down in the
future, it would slilem appropriate for the Division to consiuer

. ~.

.tb~
~\i:~
