North American fisheries managers <br />reported that mechanical control methods are not often used because they are <br />labor intensive and generally ineffective (Dunst et al. 1974). Criteria used in <br />selecting a method to control problem fishes include cost, size of water body, <br />water temperature and quality, target species, public opinion, ownership of water, <br />environmental concerns, and location of the water body (Figure 14.2). <br />All control programs should involve an awareness of the entire fish community <br />because targeting a single species without regard to its relationship to others in the <br /> <br />Table 14.1 Families of North American freshwater fishes that have been targeted for <br />control.
