Upper Mississippi River habitat rehabilitation and enhancement projects <br /> <br />(sedimentation, floodplain development, hydrological and hydraulic manipulation), Spatially distinct <br />resource problems, regionalized natural resource and navigation system management, and the availability <br />public lands have produced a variety of approaches to Upper Mississippi River restoration. <br />The goals of this paper are to (1) briefly discuss the theory and application of large river-floodplain <br />restoration; (2) introduce several habitat rehabilitation and enhancement techniques currently being <br />applied on the Upper Mississippi River; (3) describe 'ecologically sympathetic' (Petts, 1989) channel <br />maintenance operations; and (4) present some limitations of current rehabilitation techniques and provide <br />a system-oriented approach. <br />
