28

UTAII ACADEMY PROCEEDINGS, VOL. SO, P.\RT I, 1973

Postimpoundment Fish Distribution

Major findings of the Utah Coop Fishery Unit studies of 1963-66 were
. as follows: Since the closure of the Flaming Gorge D;1m in 1962 the
environment of the Green River has changed significantly from the dam to
the mouth of the Yampa River, 65 miles downstream. Seasonal fluctua-
tions in flow are reduced, daily fluctuations are increased, water tempera-
tures are lower in sununer and higher in winter, and turbidity is greatly
reduced. The Yampa River has retained its characteristics and moderates
the changes in the Green River such that all species of fish present before
impoundment are still present in the Green River below the mouth of the
Yampa. Of the seven indigenous species under consideration and in the
study area in preimpoundment times only the tlannelmouth sucker, blue-
head sucker, and the roundtail chub were found above the mouth of the
Yampa River and nOlle of the native species are known to have reproduced
in this area.
