The redside shiner feeds chiefly on aquatic and terrestrial
insects but is omnivorous, and is known to eat mollusks, small crus-
taceans, algae, its own eggs and larvae, and the young stages of game
fishes when readily available. The fry eat diatoms, copepods, ostra-
cods, and other minute plankton organisms.
This species reaches a maximum length of about five inches.
Most individuals are from two and one-half inches to three and one-
half inches long, and the females average larger than the males.
Habitat

Conditions under which the redside shiner is found vary
considerably. It occurs as frequently in creeks as it d~s in rivers
and also inhabits ponds, lakes, irrigation canals, ditches, sloughs and
warm springs. It prefers cool water, typically with summer tempera-
tures varying from about 550 to 680 F., but it has been taken in
water as cold as 440 and as wann as 750 F. The water may be very
clear or turbid; the bottom may comprise stones and gravel, rubble,
sand, clay or mud; the current varies from slow or none to swift; the
depth of water is generally not over three feet and often less than one
foot. Frequently the species is taken where vegetation is common to
dense, chiefly algae, pondweeds and cress, but it. also is often found
where there are no plants, particularly in lakes.
