Catostomus latipinnis Baird and Girard - flannelmouth sucker This species was not listed from Utah by Tanner (1936). Pantosteus platyrhynchus (Cope) - mountain sucker. This com- mon name was formerly applied, with an appropriate modifier, to all species of Pantosteus. Thus the above species was called the Bonneville mountain sucker (Miller, 1952: 27). Since sim- plicity of vernaculars is desirable, we adopt binomial common names for each species of sucker, as favored by the American Fisheries Society. It is appropriate here to correct an erroneous record of this species from the Colorado River. Miller (1952: 27) listed the mountain sucker from Lake Mead, where it was collected on 8eptember 8, 1938. Further study of this rather poorly pre- served specimen shows that it has the fontanelle close~ 48 vertebrae, a shallow, median incision in the lower lip, and the . mouth size and arrangement of papillae typical of Pantosteus delphinus. If this specimen was actually caught. in Lake Mead it represents a stray from the Virgin River; more likely, it was sampled from a bait box since at that time a dealer was collecting bait fishes from a part of Virgin River inhabited by the bluehead sucker. Pantosteus delphinus (Cope) - bluehead sucker. This species is currently divided into subspecies on the basis of body form, scale size, and fin-ray number. While this procedure may be justifiable when a thorough study has been made, the recogni- tion of subspecies is not practical in this contribution. Pantosteus virescens Cope - green sucker. This species appears to be the Bonneville and upper Snake River representative of P. delphinus; further studies may show it to be inseparable spe- cifically from that sucker. Chasmistes liorus Jordan - June sucker. This curious sucker was described from Utah Lake well before the turn of the century (1878) but was believed to have become extirpated from the Lake by the 1930's (Tanner, 1936). He regarded this species and Catostomus ardens to be the same as Catostomus fecundus, the older of the three names. Until a thorough study has been made, it seems best to recognize all three as valid species. Speci- mens apparently representing the June sucker are still caught in Utah Lake.
