AN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK EXAMPLE <br />International Mire Conservation Group (IMCG) <br />The objectives of the IMCG are: <br />- to foster wider appreciation of mires as <br />ecological systems; and <br />- to emphasize the urgent need for their pro- <br />tection. <br />by <br />1. supporting conservation measures; <br />2. identifying mires of international impor- <br />tance; <br />3. assembling information and reviewing re- <br />search needs; <br />4. developing recommendations for international <br />mire conservation policy; and <br />5. establishing an international communication <br />network. <br />The IMCG meets every 2 years. It has about 25 <br />active members, and networks to 11 nations.; <br />members each have extensive national networks. It <br />has been effective in lobbying the governments of <br />Sweden, England and Ireland to develop improved <br />peatland conservation programs.
