The GRCC agreed to gradually decrease the flow in the canal. The process began 10 November
2000 by partially closing the canal gate to maintain a two foot depth (0.6 m) in the canal and
then opening the canal sluice gates one by one in an upstream sequence. The sluice gates
diverted the water back into the Green River. As the water depth gradually receded, the canal
was electrofished 14 November using the canoe setup. The following day, the canal gate was
closed and the sluice gate between the first and second siphon was opened to drain the
remaining water into the Green River. (This portion of the canal is level, and the water will not
drain out the bottom of the canal.) The electrofishing unit was placed near the sluice gate to
sample the water as it flowed back to the river. Once the canal was completely drained, a visual
inspection from the town of Green River to the canal gate was made to determine if any
endangered fish were stranded. Isolated pools found in the canal were seined.
RESULTS
Presence of Larval Fish in the raceway and Green River Canal
No larval razorback sucker or Colorado pikeminnow were captured in the drift nets or light traps.
Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) (n=5) and a red shiner (Notropis lutrensis) (n=1) were
only the two species captured in the drift nets. Aquatic invertebrates captured in the drift
samples were chironomids (n=2) and notonectids (n=2). Flannelmouth sucker (Catostomus
latipinnis) larvae (n=3) was the only species captured in the light traps. Additional larvae
specimens (n=2) were found but were damaged and therefore difficult to identify.
Presence of Sub-adult and Adult fish in the raceway and Green River Canal
On 14 June 2000 one razorback sucker was captured in the raceway (Table 1; Table 2).
