-28-
routine purposes. During each trip the number of people fishing in
the tailrace and Little Hole upstream count zones were counted, along
with those fishing between the zones. The correction factor was express-
ed as a percentage of the sum of the tailrace and Little Hole upstream
counts, based on the mean correction factor counts. A similar approach
was used for fishermen between the Little Hole downstream count zone and
Red Creek. Further refinements will be needed in this system before
standard error terms and confidence limits can be obtained.
During the angler interviews the creel clerk recorded the party
size, trip length, and catch by species and mark and their lengths and
weights.
Results
Total estimated fishing pressure on the Flaming Gorge tailwaters
in 1977 was 619681 fisherman-hours, or approximately 20,439 man-days.
The total estimated harvest was 29,079 trout, while the mean creel rate
was 0.47 fish per fisherman-hour. These data, broken down by raft and
shore fishing and by area, are presented in Table 9. There was little
difference between catch rates of raft or shore fishermen based upon
the grand mean (0.48 vs. 0.47) although there was some variation be-
tween particular areas and months.
Raft fishermen accounted for only 29% of the total anglers, but
accounted for 41% of the total fishing pressure. This difference was
the result of longer trip length for raft fishermen (Table 10).
