-27-
Estimates of fishing pressure were made in a new manner from earlier
surveys. Raft use continued to be estimated from the numbers of rafts
launching during the scheduled surveys, but shore angling pressure was
estimated from "instantaneous" counts made at random times during each
survey. This change was necessitated by the fact that many anglers were
never seen by the normal angler interview survey.
Under the new method, the creel clerk, at a pre-selected time, left
his station and walked or drove a set course and counted all persons
fishing. The counting zone at the tailrace extended from the dam down-
stream to the pool immediately below Pipe Creek. At Little Hole two
count zones were used, one upstream from the gabion to above the first
island, and the other downstream from the gabion to a point where the
first island is visible. In Brown's Park the count zone was the entire
park and a car was used to conduct the count. Cars parked at the upper
end where people walk upstream were counted and expanded for average
party size to estimate total anglers. After August when only four days
per month were surveyed at each access area, four additional counts were
also scheduled at each access area to provide an adequate number of
counts for the pressure estimates.
Shore fishing pressure estimates were made by expanding the mean
count for each area by the total number of daylight hours available for
fishing within the particular time period. In addition, a correction
factor was needed to expand the estimate to account for anglers walking
between the tailrace and Little Hole count zones and for anglers fishing
between the Little Hole downstream count zone and Red Creek. These
correction factors were obtained during trips down the river for other
