-18-
A small number of Eagle Lake strain rainbow trout were barged into
the Wyoming portion of the open hills area during the first week of
October. These fish were approximately 75 mm (3.0 in) TL when planted
and were marked with an adipose fin-clip.
Largemouth bass and threadfin shad were not stocked in 1977 because
of the poor results obtained from the previous plants.
Results
Stocking of salmonids in Flaming Gorge Reservoir has continued
because of insufficient natural reproduction. During 1977, a total of
4,119,190 advanced fingerling trout were stocked (Table 7). Of this
total, 3,719,606 were rainbow trout fingerlings averaging 130 mm (5.1 in).
TL. A total of 399,584 brown trout averaging 140 mm (5.5 in) were stock-
ed mainly in the inflow area at a rate of 60/acre in September. Distri-
bution of rainbow trout by areas was 37.8% canyon, 55.4% open hills and
6.7% inflow. This compares with average surface areas in 1977 as follows:
canyon 9,505 a (31%), open hills 15,330 a (50%) and inflow 5,825 a
(19%). Stocking rates (No/a ) for each area are presented in Table 7.
A total of 179922 Eagle Lake strain rainbow trout were included in the
rainbow plants in the open hills area. These were surplus rainbow from
the Wyoming State stocking program.
Approximately 80% of the fingerling planted in 1977 were barged
from seven boat ramps. Most of the fingerlings were stocked along the
shoreline of the lake in shallow water. Mortality due to transportation
and stocking the fingerlings was less than one percent. Losses to sea-
gulls and fish-eating ducks after planting probably equaled transporting
and stocking losses.
