RESERVOIR FISH MARKING AND STOCKING
Job F-III
Background
A total of 45.5 million rainbow trout have been stocked in Flaming
Gorge Reservoir since it began filling in 1962, an average of 3.0 million
annually. Included in this total are 2.1 million Kamloops strain rain-
bow trout planted from 1969 to 1971. Other salmonids planted over the
years include 790 thousand cutthroat trout from 1967 to 19729 1.2 million
kokanee salmon in 1963 and 19649 and 3.4 million brown trout from 1966
to 1977.
From 1963 to 1972, rainbow trout fingerlings averaging 51 to 83 mm
(2.0-3.3 in) total length (TL) were distributed in the lake using a plant-
ing barge. Other salmonids were stocked as fingerlings of similar size.
A management change in 1973 initiated a 127 mm (5 in) advanced finger-
ling program for rainbow and brown trout. Barging of the fingerlings
was stopped in 1974 in favor of boat ramp plants. Barging of finger-
lings was resumed in 1977.
Other species of fish planted in the lake include 61 thousand small-
mouth bass in 1967, 773 thousand largemouth bass from 1972 to 1976 and
30.6 million eggs along with 11 thousand adult threadfin shad from 1972
to 1976.
Methods
Rainbow trout and brown trout were again stocked in Flaming Gorge
Reservoir. The rainbow trout were distributed mainly in the canyon and
open hills areas of the lake with planting barges from April through
August. The brown trout were spray-marked with fluorescent dye and
barged throughout the inflow and open hills areas during September.
