Three
ecoregions of the Rio Grande in Texas have now been surveyed with only the lower Rio Grande Valley remaining.
These data will be used to aid in proper management decisions for this unique resource as well as provide guidelines
for protection and mitigation after implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The Chihuahuan
Desert Fishes Status Survey is a cooperative, Section 6 project that will provide for status determination of several
Federal Category 2 fishes that occur in the Chihuahuan Desert region of Texas, New Mexico and the Republic of
Mexico. We have secured water rights for the Balmorhea C16nega Project and can now proceed with construction
of what should become a functional desert ci6nega. We are also providing security and monitoring for the Bureau
of Reclamation's Phantom Lake Springs Refugium. Finally, the Texas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society
had the pleasure of an enlightening pair of talks by Phil Pister, Executive Secretary of DFC, on ethics of
biodiversity and pros and cons of fish stocking.
