08/09/99 MON 17:04 FAX 801 524 5021
USFWS-Utah Field Office RO-COKANUT Z007
Whole-body fish
Selenium concentrations in whole-body fish collected in Stewart Lake during 1998 ranged from
2.1 to 32.9 µg/g dw with a geometric mean of 14.4 gg/g dw (n=49). It appears there was a
decrease in the concentration of selenium in 1998. Compared to fish collected in 1997 (n=54 with
a range of 3.7 to 37.0 µg/g dw), the geometric mean selenium concentration in all whole-body
fish samples as well as in carp only whole-body samples suggests a_3 1.8% decrease in selenium
concentrations from 1997 to 1998 (Table 6). Other summary statistics (mean, median, minimum
and maximum) also show a decrease in selenium concentrations from 1997 to 1998. There are
several possible explanations for this decrease. One possibility is that remediation efforts aimed at
flushing Stewart Lake with Green River water decreased the amount'of available selenium. While
this would be desirable, additional sediment sampling is needed to ascertain the results.
Table 6. Comparison of selenium concentrations in whole-body fish for 1997 and 1998.

Description All All All
1997 1998 %Change Carp Carp Carp
1997 1998 %Change
Number of Samples 54 49 46 42
Number of Species 5 4 1 1
Minimum 3.7 2.1 -43.2% 10.5 2.12 -79.8%
Maximum 37.0 32.9 -11.1 % 37.0 32.9 - 11.1%
Median 23.2 15.9 -31.5% 23.9 17.3 -27.6%
G+?otneirtc:::..:ea :9::: :::::::::-
Mean 22.5 16.3 -27.6% 24.0 17.6 -267%
Whole-body fish samples were collected from the new inlet in 1998, but not in 1997, while whole-
body fish were collected at the .T1 Drain in 1997 but not in 1998. Table 7 shows the geometric
means and percent change in selenium concentrations in whole-body carp for each sample
location. Selenium concentrations decreased at all locations.
Selenium concentrations in whole-body carp from the Green River ranged from 1.7 to 18.3 gg/g
dw with an overall geometric mean of 5.9 µg/g. The highest concentration was from Brush Creek
which also had the highest geometric mean (Table 8). Changes in selenium concentrations
between 1997 and 1998 were generally down with an overall decrease of 21.3%.
