Box 276 <br />Death Valley, CA 92328 <br />February 7, 1979 <br />RESOLUTION 78-4 <br />RELATIVE TO THE RESTORATION OF SAN SIMON CIENAGA <br />WHEREAS aquatic and associated ecosystems in the southwestern United States are <br />both highly important biologically and greatly diminished in their <br />present state, and <br />WHEREAS San Simon Ci6naga, Hidalgo County, New Mexico and Cochise County, Arizona <br />is such an ecosystem on public land, and <br />WHEREAS this Cienaga has been greatly altered to provide a refuge for the Mexican <br />duck Was platyrhynchos diazi) and other wildlife-related purposes, and <br />WHEREAS such alterations are no longer necessary priorities and have in fact been <br />detrimental to some native species and to the original character of the <br />ecosystem; now therefore be it <br />RESOLVED that the Desert Fishes Council, an organization numbering in excess of <br />300 persons and comprising a nationwide and international representation <br />of federal, state, and university scientists and resource specialists, <br />members of conservation organizations, and individuals concerned with long- <br />term environmental values, meeting at its Tenth Annual Symposium in Las <br />Cruces, New Mexico on November 17, 1978, does hereby recommend that the <br />Bureau of Land Management restore the area to a more natural state, with <br />emphasis on the re-creation of the primeval biota, to include the Gila <br />topminnow (Poeciliopsi.s o. occidentalis), Gila chub (Gila intermedia), <br />and other native fishes, both to preserve the natural diversity of the region <br />and to foster scientific and educational benefits for mankind, and be it <br />further <br />RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be forwarded to the State Directors of the <br />Bureau of Land Management in New Mexico and Arizona, to the Regional Director <br />of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and to <br />the Directors of the Game and Fish Departments in New Mexico and Arizona. <br />PASSED WITHOUT DISSENTING VOTE <br />AT T: <br />web7--- <br />Peter G.
