Box 276 <br />Death Valley, CA 92328 <br />February 7, 1979 <br />RESOLUTION 78-1 <br />RELATIVE TO THE COLORADO SQUAWFISH (PTYCHOCHEILUS LUCIUS) <br />WHEREAS the Colorado squawfish is a species in serious danger of extinction, and <br />WHEREAS it appears certain that preservation of the Colorado squawfish is not <br />compatible with continued alteration of its environment, and <br />WHEREAS the Desert Fishes Council fully supports the intent of the Federal Endangered <br />Species Act to preserve native species and the integrity of the natural <br />ecosystems which support their existence, and recognizes its responsibility <br />to preserve this heritage for the benefit of future generations, and <br />WHEREAS the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has requested comment on <br />the Colorado Squawfish Recovery Plan and on the proposed designation of <br />critical habitat, which includes reaches of the Colorado, Green, Yampa, <br />and Gunnison rivers, now therefore be it <br />RESOLVED that the Desert Fishes Council, an organization numbering in excess of <br />300 persons and comprising a nationwide and international representation of <br />federal, state, and university scientists and resource specialists, members <br />of private conservation organizations, and individuals concerned with long-term <br />environmental valuest meeting at its Tenth Annual Symposium in Las Cruces, <br />New Mexico on November 17, 1978, does hereby recommend that no upstream <br />developments be constructed which will result in decreased flows in the section <br />of river to be designated as critical habitat until the flow requirements are <br />determined; and be it further <br />RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be forwarded to the Director of the U.S. Fish <br />and Wildlife Service; to the Regional Offices of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife <br />Service in Regions II and VI; to the Governors of the States of Colorado, Utah, <br />and Wyoming; to the Leader of the Colorado River Fishes Recovery Team; to the <br />Bureau of Reclamation Regional Offices in Boulder City, Nevada and Salt Lake <br />City, Utah; to the Secretary of Interior; to the Environmental Protection <br />Agency; to the Army Corps of Engineers; to the Commissioner of Reclamation; <br />and to the Superintendent of Dinosaur National Monument. <br />PASSED WITHOUT DISSENTING VOTE <br />ATTEST: <br />eter G.
