. 6
was evaluated. At areas not located near a USGS gaging station, the dis-
charge was measured using standard techniques. Velocities were measured at
mid- and side-channel locations at most cross-sections. The measured data
were processed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Burec) backwater curve
hydraulic prediction computer program known variously as "Pseudo" or "Water
Surface Profile" (WSP). For each measurement area, mean depths, velocities,
widths and conveyance areas werepredicted for: 1) the measured 1977 flow;
"'0"'305
2) the mean annual flow; 3) the maximum mean monthly flow; and 4) the modal
flow, or a flow approximating the most common discharge seen on a yearly
basis. Cross-sectional profiles were also prepared.
Fishes were collected by fine (<0.6 mm mesh) and coarse mesh (>0.6 mm
mesh) seines, and by dip net at all collection sites. In addition, larger
juveniles and adults were collected at three sites (Y2J, A and1.0__on the
Yampa River and one site (C) on the White River by boat electrofishing.
Field descriptions and parameters recorded with each collection are
indicated on the front of the fish data sheets in Appendix B. Photographs
(color slides) were taken of upstream, across and downstream views through
each sampling site to further document the sites and the conditions under
which samples were taken (Appendix C). Most specimens were processed in the
field and released, but larvae and early juveniles as well as some older
specimens had to be preserved in 10910 formalin and returned to the laboratory
for positive identification before processing. A few older, identified
specimens were also preserved for voucher purposes. Specimens were identi-
fied, segregated into one of five length groups (0-20, 21-50, 51-150, 151-300
and 301 min TL and over), and counted. After processing, preserved specimens
were stored in 3% buffered formalin with appropriate labels for future use in
voucher collections and developmental studies.
