I t
2.
INTRODUCT I0N
This report documents the findings of the first year's work on the
Colorado Division of Wildlife's (DOW) "Population and Habitat Monitoring
Program for the Endangered Humpback Chub (Gila cypha) and Colorado Squawfish
(Ptychocheilus Lucius)." The objectives of the program are to document and
correlate habitat and fish population changes within selected trend zones on
the Yampa, White, Gunnison and Colorado Rivers in Colorado over a period of
several years. This is being accomplished by direct observation and measure-
ment of selected habitat parameters and by fish collection in specific habitats
at selected sites within each trend zone on an annual basis. Habitat and
related impacts are documented throughout each trend zone with special emphasis
on selected "habitat measurement areas" to provide data for predicting future
changes or potential effects. Emphasis in fish collection is on the larvae
and juveniles so as to provide data useful in delimiting spawning seasons and
spawning and nursery areas, as well as information on habitat requirements
or preferences, and relative abundance.
THE STUDY AREAS
Five trend zones were selected on the basis of recent captures of hump-
back chubs or Colorado squawfish and access. The trend zones are indicated
on the contour maps in this report (Fig. 2-6) and are located as follows:
Yampa River - South-central portion of S. 20, T. 7N. 95W, to
north-central portion of S. 20, T. 7N, R. 96W of the 6th P.M.;
Maybell to Sunbeam, Moffat, County, Colorado; approximately 16
km in length. V,,g. 1 and z).
White River - Southeast portion of S. 6, T. IN, R. 96W to southeast
portion of S. 18, T. 2N, R. 98W of the 6th P.M.; Rio Blanco Lake
to County Road 65 Bridge, Rio Blanco, County, Colorado; approxi-
mately 16 km. (F;g- 1 -J 3).
