17.
and red shiners (Notropis lutrensis). The most abundant native fish collected
was the roundtail chub.
We noted an increase in abundance of sandshiners in the Yampa River
compared to 1976 collections (Prewitt et al. 1977 and 1978). Also of interest
was the collections of the plains killifish in Yampa River at sites B, C, and
D. The only other documentation of this fi,h in the Yampa River was made by
Prewitt et al. (1977) at site A, 22-24 June 1976.
The red shiner, Notropis lutrensis, was more common in collections in
the White River in 1977 relative to 1976 when none were taken in the area
by Prewitt et al. (1977). In contrast to the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers,
red shiners did not show any evidence of spawning, at least prior to the
sampling dates.
A reproducing population of mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, were
collected in backwater areas at the Old Clifton Bridge, site F on the
Colorado River (Table 11). This may be a recent introduction into the river
as we were unable to find any documentation of its occurrence there. Visual
observation was made of fish believed to be this species in the Labor Camp
impoundment, off the Colorado River near Bridges Switch, (site G), but none
could be collected for verification.
